5,000 Miles From Home

5,000 Miles From Home tells the riveting tale of a generation of Italian kids from the streets of Chicago who proudly answered the call to serve their country during World War II. In-depth interviews with two dozen veterans are interwoven with vintage film footage and rare archival photos as you follow these brave men from their working-class roots to their wartime travails to the very different lives they led when they came back home.

They were the sons of immigrants who left dirt-poor towns in Italy for a better life in America. Many didn't speak a word of English until they went to kindergarten, but they managed to thrive even through the Great Depression. After Pearl Harbor was bombed, they were swept up and away from the neighborhoods of their youth, first by the winds of war and then on the wings of the G.I. Bill.

5,000 Miles From Home is an intimate look at two dozen men who helped comprise the largest ethnic fighting force in World War II. Whimsical stories about spaghetti dinners and simpler times give way to tales of bravery and death on the battlefield, which then yield to fond memories of family and prosperity in the post-war era. As this saga unfolds, a well-earned spotlight is shone on a generation of true Americans who, to this day, remain both humble and heroic.
